Business initiation trip for tourism industry to Sri Lanka

From 08.09. - 12.09.2025, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka), in cooperation with the German Travel Association (DRV) and Bondacon International, is organizing a business initiation trip for German tourism companies to Sri Lanka on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economics Affairs and Climate Action. This project is part of the foreign market entry program for SMEs. The target group is primarily small and medium-sized German enterprises (SMEs).

After the crisis-ridden years of 2019 to 2023, caused by macroeconomic challenges and political instability, Sri Lanka is currently on the road to recovery with a positive outlook for 2025. Gross domestic product grew by 5.5% in the third quarter of 2024 - the highest figure since 2021. The upturn in the island's industrial sectors is particularly noteworthy, with growth of 10.8%. In addition, tourism in Sri Lanka is developing positively again after the coronavirus crisis. In 2023, the tourism sector was the third largest source of foreign currency income.

In the peak season of January and February 2024, the number of tourists arriving doubled compared to 2023. In order to further expand tourism in Sri Lanka, the MICE sector in Colombo and the range of exclusive and sustainable travel experiences are to be expanded in particular. Foreign partners and service providers - especially from Germany - are desired and in demand.

Prior to the trip, participants will receive specific compact information on the industry and market situation, as well as on the legal and tax framework and import regulations. In Sri Lanka (Colombo and Kandy), participating companies can present their products to a selected specialist audience. Individually arranged business appointments with Sri Lankan business partners and high-ranking representatives of trade associations as well as company visits create the basis for new collaborations and enable future order acquisitions.

The project is part of the foreign market entry program for SMEs and is subject to the de-minimis regulations. Depending on the size of the company, the participants own contribution for participating in the project is between EUR 500 and EUR 1,000 (net).

The registration deadline is 27.05.2025.

The preliminary program, the application documents and further information can be found in the project flyer.
